Music Editions Online: Mohapeloa Critical Edition Print E-mail

The Mohapeloa Critical Edition is a project established in 2009 at Stellenbosch University by Christine Lucia, Extraordinary Professor in the Department of Music. It has two aims: the scholarly pursuit of research into Basotho composer Joshua Pulumo Mohapeloa (1908-1982) including research informing a new Critical Edition of his music edited by Lucia, and the commercial dissemination of scores in this edition by African Composers Edition. The scholarship has been supported with generous funding from the Southern African Music Rights Organisation (SAMRO), the Bellagio Rockefeller Foundation, the National Arts Council of South Africa, and Stellenbosch University.

Online publication imprint African Composers Edition is a collaboration with the copyright holders of Mohapeloa’s intellectual property, his daughter-in-law Ntsiuoa Joyce Mohapeloa and grandson Pulumo Joshuoa Mohapeloa. Each vocal score is available with and without tonic solfa and is catalogued by Publisher’s No. (ACE 001, ACE002…), Composer Catalogue no. (JPM 001, JPM002…), and International Standard Music Number (ISMN). More information on African Composers Edition and the Mohapeloa Critical Edition can be found on

The Mohapeloa project is linked to a new scholarly debate initiated during three postgraduate seminars held in the Music Department during Feb-March 2013. This debate aims to explore and develop new ways of defining, analysing, and interpreting ‘African Music’ in its many different contexts and manifestations in southern Africa.
